Great post. “Doing things you enjoy, can often lead to not sucking at them.” This is a true gem.

It is also useful to note that if you don’t do things that you suck at, then you probably aren’t doing anything new or useful to your development.

A side benefit of giving yourself permission to suck: you will start giving everyone else permission to suck too – and instead of being one of the usual crowd trying to guilt each other into being OK with being mediocre, you’ll turn into one of those people that encourages everyone to aim a little higher, like Mr. Kadavy here. How great would that be?

Great post, David. I nearly quit banjo because I sucked so bad. I didn’t have time to practice enough to be good at it and I was embarrassed by that. My banjo instructor reminded me that the whole idea of taking banjo lessons was to have fun. I’ve been trying that instead of beating myself up all the time. I still suck, but at least I’m having fun.

I teach meditation beginning with 3 breaths so people like your friend can have a real experience of meditation, and have it be something they can continue to develop over time.

Even so, I fall into thinking I should progress faster. I’m training in a new practice and thought I was supposed to have the breath part down in 6 months, in time for the next retreat. Then the teacher said it took his translator 6 years (!!!) to get it.

Somehow it makes it easier to have a 6 year suck timeline.
