I love writing for my blog. I HATE trying to keep my site updated, up-to-date, and secure.

I used to create a WordPress blog, and host it myself. That’s fine if you’re trying to learn web design, but eventually you have a business to run. Even though WordPress is easy to install, there are plenty of details that are easy to overlook:

Doing all of the above stuff sucks. Writing for my blog, on the other hand, is fun. I don’t want to spend time worrying about any of the stuff above. I want to spend time writing. That’s the whole point.

So, I use WPEngine to take care of all of that stuff for me.

WPEngine is a hosted WordPress solution. They give you a server with WordPress installed, and they do a bunch of stuff to keep it secure, keep your WordPress optimized and fast, keep it up-to-date – a bunch of stuff. They even answer stupid questions from me over the phone. In exchange for all of this amazingness, I give them some money each month. It’s way less than hiring some flakey freelancer to keep my server up, only to have him disappear once he gets bored, leaving me with a malware infested site; and I make way more money in the time that they save me.

There are hosted WordPress solutions other than WPEngine. I know, because I’ve tried several of them. You see, I don’t just have kadavy.net. I have a bunch of other sites, so I’ve experimented with other services.

Some of them are okay. Some of them suck. I don’t even want to mention them because they suck so bad. Sorry, I don’t get angry like this often, but when you’re on stage at a talk and someone raises your hand to tell you your site is down – well, that makes you upset.

Finally, I’ve settled on WPEngine, and I’ve been extremely happy. My site is fast, it’s up-to-date, it’s never down, and the support is amazing. I call them on the phone! The phone! Like a caveman.
